Glass Types
Standard Float Glass
Standard float glass has a slight ‘green’ appearance caused by its iron content; this appearance becomes more noticeable on thicker glass (10-12mm). For this reason, exact colour matches using lighter colours on standard float glass are unreliable and we do not use or recommend it.
Low Iron Glass
Low iron glass has much of its iron content removed during manufacture, appears optically clear and is therefore highly suitable for painting as true colour matches can be achieved. Glass Inspirations use low iron glass as standard.
Available in thicknesses of 6-19mm it is suitable for both worktops and splashbacks.
Toughened vs. non-toughened
Non-toughened glass is highly susceptible to breakage, especially around fine details such as socket cut outs. For this reason we toughen all our glass to BS6206-EN12600 no matter where it will be installed. This is not true of all suppliers.
The single exception is where a work piece is too small to toughen – normally under 300mm square.
Cut outs and shapes
All shaping, cut outs, holes and notches must be carried out prior to toughening – after this process the glass cannot be altered. To avoid wastage we recommend that detailed drawings are supplied with your order, our advisors can then contact you to discuss them before any work proceeds.
Edge work
For reasons of safety, all glass is supplied with polished outer edges as standard.
Installation
A ‘Low modulus’ silicone adhesive is used to fix glass to walls. Apply in 150mm beads to the reverse and push gently but firmly into position. All walls should be reasonably flat and free from high spots.
Electrical sockets and fixings
All electric fixings must be removed by a qualified electrician prior to fixing and replaced once the glass is in position.
